A battery is the one part you can diagnose properly before you pay anyone, and most people who arrive saying “my battery is dead” have a battery that is fine and a charger or software problem that is not. Ten minutes of checking saves a ₹3,000 replacement you did not need.
Five signs it is the battery, and two that fool you
The genuine ones:
- It runs three hours or less on a charge it used to manage five.
- It dies abruptly at 30 or 40 percent, with no warning and no hibernate.
- It charges, then drops to a much lower figure within minutes of unplugging.
- It only works on mains, with the percentage pinned at 100 percent.
- The bottom case, trackpad or palm rest is domed. Deal with that one today.
The two that fool people: a background sync or runaway application draining the pack in an hour, and a failing charger. Rule both out free by leaving it on mains for an hour, then running it on battery alone with everything closed.
Read the cycle count yourself
On Windows, open a command prompt and run powercfg /batteryreport, then open the HTML file it writes. Three numbers matter:
- Design capacity: what the pack held on day one.
- Full charge capacity: what it holds now. Divide one by the other for the wear figure. Below about 80 percent, replace; below 60 percent, it is in its last year.
- Cycle count: full discharges lived through. Under 300 is young, 500 to 800 is where fade becomes noticeable, and past roughly 800 with reduced capacity, stop guessing.
The same report lists which programs drew the most charge, which settles the software question in a minute.
On a Mac, hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, and read the Power section for cycle count and condition. Apple’s own threshold is 80 percent of original capacity, below which macOS reports “service recommended”.
Done, or just out of calibration?
Calibration is a free ten-minute procedure: charge to 100 percent, leave it on mains for two hours, run it down to about 10 percent without closing the lid, then charge back to 100 percent uninterrupted.
Calibrate rather than replace when the runtime has dropped but the numbers are healthy, when the percentage jumps around unpredictably, or when the machine shuts down well above zero. The rule holds: calibration fixes the gauge, it cannot restore capacity.
A swollen battery is the one genuinely urgent job
A swollen battery is a cell producing gas, and the pressure lifts the case. NCR heat is the accelerant: a pack used constantly in May and June.
Signs, in the order they appear: the bottom case is visibly domed, a gap opens along the seam near the palm rest, keys start to rock, the machine feels warm while switched off, and finally the screen bezel goes uneven.
What to do now: shut it down, do not charge it, do not keep working on it, do not press the bulge flat, and do not carry it with something resting on top of it. Do not courier it to a service centre without telling them in advance. Fires from laptop batteries are rare but documented, and replacing a ₹3,000 battery is trivial next to that risk.
What it costs, and what moves the price
| Machine | Typical battery replacement |
|---|---|
| Mainstream Windows laptop | ₹1,500-4,000 |
| Premium ultrabook | ₹3,500-7,000 |
| Gaming laptop | ₹2,500-6,000 |
| MacBook | ₹6,000-18,000 |
Ranges, because part grade and warranty matter more than the brand. An OEM-grade pack with six to twelve months of cover sits at the top; a compatible pack sits at the bottom. Labour is usually included or ₹300 to ₹800.
The variable people miss: roughly a third of “battery problems” are charger faults. If it charges with a different brick and not with its own, you need a ₹900 to ₹2,500 charger, not a ₹4,000 battery.
Before you hand it over
Back up, and sign out of cloud accounts if the disk will be wiped. Note the serial and the current cycle count before you go, so nobody can claim the pack was already worn. Turnaround is same-day if the battery is in stock, two to five days if it is ordered. The full cost comparison puts batteries alongside the other parts, and for a longer outage a laptop rental costs less than the delay.
FAQ
How long should a laptop battery last? Two to three years of daily mobile use. Office machines that spend most of the day on mains often last four or five, because they spend most of their life at a low state of charge.
Does leaving it plugged in damage the battery? Heat is the enemy, not the charger. For a machine that lives on the desk, a charge limit of 60 to 80 percent in the manufacturer’s software or BIOS is the best thing you can do for its life.
Is a compatible battery as good as the original? A good OEM-grade pack is close. A no-name pack is not, and the usual complaint is a gauge that lies. Ask which grade is being fitted and get a warranty period in writing.
What should I do with the old battery? Ask for it back and take it to an e-waste collection point. Batteries do not belong in household waste.
