A repair quote is only useful if it names the part. Most of the spread between shops is not skill: one shop quotes an original part, the other a compatible one, and neither says which.

The price table, by part and machine tier

Ranges, not prices, in INR, for parts fitted and the job done.

PartBudget laptop, 2 to 4 yearsMid-range, 3 to 6 yearsPremium or MacBook
Battery₹1,500-3,000₹2,500-5,000₹6,000-18,000
Screen panel or lid₹3,000-5,500₹4,500-9,000₹18,000-45,000
Keyboard₹1,200-2,500₹2,000-5,000₹6,000-15,000
Trackpad₹1,500-3,000₹2,500-5,000₹6,000-14,000
SSD or RAM upgrade₹2,000-4,000₹3,000-7,000₹8,000-20,000
Motherboard repair₹3,000-7,000₹5,000-12,000₹20,000-50,000, often not viable
Hinge or lid frame₹1,500-3,000₹2,500-6,000Usually part of the display assembly
Charging port₹1,200-2,500₹2,000-4,000₹3,000-8,000
Clean, paste, fan₹600-1,500₹800-2,500₹1,500-4,000
Liquid damage assessment₹1,000-2,500₹1,500-3,000₹2,000-5,000, outcome uncertain
Data recovery₹3,000-15,000₹3,000-15,000₹3,000-15,000

Two rows do not scale with brand: data recovery depends on the drive and the damage, and a clean-and-paste costs the same on a ₹35,000 machine as on a ₹2 lakh one.

What moves a quote within a range

  • Part grade. OEM-grade with a warranty at the top, compatible without one in the middle, salvaged at the bottom. A screen quoted at ₹3,500 or ₹7,000 is honest either way, if one says which.
  • Availability. In stock is same-day. Ordered is two to five days, often with a shorter warranty.
  • Labour. Absorbed on some jobs, billed separately on others, and the fitting is what damages a new panel.
  • Who is quoting. A brand service centre sits at the top of every range, an independent shop in the middle, a market stall at the bottom. The difference is paid for in warranty.
  • GST. A quote without GST is a quote you cannot claim anywhere, which matters for a business.

Where quotes most often go wrong

“Call us once we open it” is not a quote. Neither is a price listing the part but not the labour, or a figure with no part number. Two specific traps: being quoted the low end and then told the original part costs extra once the machine is open, and a battery fault blamed on the battery when it is the charger brick.

The line where repair stops making sense

The threshold I use: repair under about 30 to 35 percent of a comparable new machine, replace above it. Not 50 percent, and not a fixed amount, which assumes you know what your machine is worth.

A worked example. A five-year-old laptop bought for ₹58,000 now sells for roughly ₹20,000 to ₹25,000. A ₹3,000 battery and a ₹3,500 SSD bring it back to usable for ₹6,500, about 11 percent of the new equivalent. A ₹12,000 motherboard on that same laptop is 21 percent of a new machine and 60 percent of the used price. That is not a repair, it is a donation.

The used market is the better reference. If the repair costs more than an equivalent used machine sells for, stop. For new comparable machine prices see the business laptop buying guide; for the decision itself, the repair versus replacement framework works through it step by step.

The cheap repairs worth doing anyway

If money is tight, these give the most for the least, in order:

  1. Clean, fresh thermal paste, fan check. ₹600 to ₹2,500.
  2. Battery replacement. ₹1,500 to ₹5,000, and nothing else makes an old machine feel new.
  3. SSD in place of a hard drive. ₹2,500 to ₹7,000.
  4. RAM to 8 or 16GB. ₹1,500 to ₹6,000.

Together, ₹6,000 to ₹20,000 turns a neglected five-year-old machine into something a small office can work on. Do these before debating anything dearer.

What to ask for in writing

The part name and number, the grade or supplier, whether the part is in stock or ordered, the warranty on part and labour, whether your data will be preserved, and the total including GST. If any of those six comes back as a shrug, you are being quoted a guess.

If the drive is making noise or the machine has liquid damage, get the data question settled first: data recovery is far cheaper before a reinstall than after one.

FAQ

Are compatible parts as good as original ones? For batteries and storage, a good compatible part is close enough. For screens and keyboards you use daily, OEM-grade is worth the difference. Panel grade is covered in the screen cost guide.

Why is my quote lower than the table? Usually because it excludes the fitting, or the part is salvaged. Sometimes the first quote is a loss leader for a larger repair. Ask for the total with part number and warranty.

Is it cheaper to repair than buy a used machine? A basic repair on a mechanically sound machine usually is not: the used market is efficient. Repairing makes sense when it lifts a machine you own to a spec you need, or when the data on it matters.

Should I add a new warranty when I repair? Worth it when the machine is under five years old and the repair is a major part. On a nine-year-old machine, a ₹6,000 service contract buys little over careful part selection.
