A home-office desktop rarely fails because something inside broke. It fails because it has run twelve hours a day in a dusty room for four years and nobody has opened the side panel. The pattern is predictable, and mostly preventable.

Dust is the main cause, and it is easy to confirm

Open the side panel first and look:

  • Dust matted into a felt blanket on the CPU heatsink fins and fan blades.
  • A clogged dust filter or intake grill full of fluff, hair and construction dust. Noida in monsoon mixes road dust, pollen and damp, and it packs into those grills fast.
  • Dust on the memory sticks and cards, harmless alone but a hint about everything else.

A proper clean with brush, compressed air and fresh thermal paste is ₹800 to ₹2,500, the highest-value repair on a neglected machine. Do it every six months, and always before May.

Throttling, and how to prove it

You can hear throttling before you measure it: a machine idling at full fan speed, warm to the touch, dropping frames on a video call. The classic wrong diagnosis is “my antivirus is slowing it down” when the CPU is actually being held at a fraction of its clock because it is too hot.

Install a free hardware monitoring utility and watch temperature and clock speed under load. Typical ranges: 35 to 50°C at idle, 75 to 90°C in heavy load. Anything pinned near 95 to 100°C with the clock dropping means the machine is protecting itself.

Fixes in order of effect: clean the heatsink, re-paste, replace a noisy fan, then move the case. A desktop against a wall, on the floor or under a cloth gains several degrees immediately.

The power supply, and why it gets blamed for everything

Symptoms that point at the PSU rather than the board:

  • Random restarts or freezes, but only under load.
  • The machine resets when an air conditioner or water pump starts, which is a supply symptom.
  • One restart at boot, then it runs fine all day.
  • A hot plastic smell near the back, or discoloration inside the PSU.
  • The front LEDs come on for a second, then nothing.

A budget PSU in a home build is often the first thing to fail and the cheapest thing to replace: ₹1,400 to ₹4,500 for a decent unit. Two reasons to do it even when it is only suspect. A failing PSU drags the motherboard down with it, so a ₹2,500 repair now becomes a ₹12,000 one in six months. And a supply that will not hold up under load produces symptoms that look exactly like a dying motherboard.

Dead PSU or dead motherboard: a ten-minute test

  1. Swap in a known-good PSU. Borrow one from another desktop of the same wattage or higher and connect the 24-pin and CPU power cables. Never connect a small supply to a machine that needs more.
  2. Watch what happens. Fan spins, nothing else: no CMOS message, no beep, no display. That points at the board, or rarely the CPU.
  3. Test the suspect supply with a cheap PSU tester, roughly ₹400 to ₹900. The paperclip-short trick on the 24-pin also works but tells you less, and only unplugged.
  4. Reseat everything cheap. RAM in and out, graphics card in and out, every power and data cable firmly seated, front-panel wires on the right pins. A front-panel wire in the wrong slot stops a board dead.
  5. Clear CMOS. Pull the coin cell for a minute, or use the clear-CMOS jumper.

The decision rule: if it boots and reaches a display with a different PSU, the old PSU was the fault. If it stays dead with a known-good supply, it is the board, and the value question starts. Board-level repair on a healthy board runs ₹3,000 to ₹10,000, but burnt or water-damaged board repairs fail again and are not worth paying for.

When the honest answer is a new machine

  • Total estimate above roughly 40 percent of a comparable new desktop.
  • Proprietary parts no longer made, or a machine old enough that chipset drivers are no longer published.
  • Display, motherboard and PSU all failing at once.

If the drive is clicking, do not let anyone reinstall Windows before you have tried data recovery. If the machine will be out of action for a week, renting a desktop usually costs less than a month of disruption. FAQ

Is it safe to open a desktop and clean it myself? Yes, if you unplug it at the wall and hold the case by its frame. If the PSU shows a burn mark, let a shop handle it.

How hot is too hot? Sustained 95°C and above under load means throttling. Over 90°C in an Indian summer is a reason to clean and re-paste even if the machine still works.

One beep, no display: what does that mean? Usually memory or graphics, and both are cheap to test. Reseat the RAM, try one stick at a time, and reseat the graphics card.

Will the technician need the machine for a day? A clean, RAM or storage job and a fan swap are same-day. A PSU or motherboard replacement is a day if the part is in hand, two to five if it is ordered. Not sure what you are looking at? Send the model number on the contact page first.
