Two laptops with identical model numbers can be quoted ₹10,000 apart for the same job. Almost none of that gap is the shop’s pricing: it is the panel grade, the damage assessment, and whether the part is still in production.

Panel grade is the single biggest variable

Panel typeWhat you getTypical fitted price
TN45 percent colour, narrow viewing angles, cheap₹2,500-4,500
IPS70-75 percent colour, wide angles, the common choice₹4,000-9,000
OLEDTrue blacks, high contrast, higher cost, some burn-in risk₹12,000-30,000
Touch or pen digitiserAdds a separate layer and its own failure mode15 to 40 percent on top

The replacement is usually not the panel the machine shipped with. A TN panel fitted into a laptop that left the factory with IPS is the most common downgrade I see, and the owner rarely notices until someone sits beside them on a call.

The tells: colours go grey and wash out when you tilt the lid, the anti-glare coating is gone, and the panel runs warmer. If the old display was noticeably sharp and the new one looks soft, that is a grade drop, not a fault.

Hinge or panel: the assessment that decides the quote

Before agreeing to a number, establish how much of the lid is broken:

  • Cracks radiating from one impact point, display working, lid holds its angle: panel only. The cheapest job on a laptop.
  • A crack along the top edge or outward from the hinge: the lid frame is involved, and a panel-only replacement will crack again within weeks.
  • The lid will not hold any angle, or the panel moves inside the bezel: hinge damage. You need the assembly, not a panel.
  • Stress marks at the bezel corners, panel pulling from the frame: the mounts have torn. Full assembly.
  • No glass damage, no picture, works with an external monitor: likely the display cable or backlight, ₹1,500 to ₹3,500. Test this before accepting a full assembly quote.
  • Touch dead but image fine: the digitiser, separate on some models and part of the panel on others.

A panel-only job on a mainstream Windows laptop runs ₹3,000 to ₹7,000 fitted; a full lid assembly runs ₹6,000 to ₹15,000 on the same machine. A MacBook has no third option: display, lid glass, camera and bezel arrive as one bonded assembly, ₹18,000 to ₹45,000 by model.

Why the same model gets four different quotes

Ask four questions and the quotes start to line up:

  1. What is the panel part number and grade? It is on a label on the back of the old panel. A shop that cannot name it is guessing.
  2. Does the price include the cable and bezel? A quote for the panel alone is not a quote for a working lid.
  3. In stock or ordered, and what warranty? In-stock can be same-day. Ordered is two to five days, and warranty on a new panel is commonly 30 to 90 days.
  4. Is labour included? A part-price-only quote means the fitting is billed separately, and the fitting is what can damage a new panel.

If the model was discontinued years ago, the panel may only exist as a compatible aftermarket part that differs slightly in brightness and colour temperature from the original. Ask whether that is what is being fitted.

When a screen is not worth replacing

  • The machine is seven years or older and the panel is no longer made.
  • There is liquid damage as well. A new panel in a corroded lid is a repair that fails again.
  • The panel, backlight and board are all involved, which usually means a second dip in water or a hard drop.
  • The estimate is more than about a third of a comparable new machine. A ₹9,000 screen on a four-year-old ₹45,000 laptop that works fine otherwise is worth paying. A ₹30,000 panel on a twelve-year-old machine is not, and an external monitor at ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 does the same job.

Ask for these checks before you take it back

Show white, black and a colour image at minimum and maximum brightness. Touch or draw across the whole surface if it is a touch panel. Open and close the lid twenty times and watch the panel for flex.

FAQ

How long does a screen replacement take? Two to three hours if the panel is in stock, two to five days if it is ordered, and MacBook display assemblies commonly take a day or more.

Is it worth fixing a screen on an old laptop? Yes if the rest of the machine is good and the panel is still made. No if the laptop is ancient, the panel is discontinued, or there is water damage as well.

Will a cheaper panel look different from the original? It can. TN and IPS differ visibly in viewing angle and colour, and aftermarket panels on older models differ in brightness. Ask for the grade in writing.

Does the warranty cover the new screen? Usually 30 to 90 days on the part, with labour in the same period. A panel that separates at the bezel within a month is a fitting problem worth raising immediately.
