ISO 27001 Cost

ISO 27001 Certification Cost in India (2026)

Certification has two bills that are often confused. One pays a consultant to build the management system; the other pays the certification body to audit it. A quote that mentions only the first is not a certification budget, and the second bill recurs every year.

ISO 27001 Certification Cost

The system of record is an information security management system: scope, risk assessment, control selection, evidence and review. Certification is an auditor's opinion that the system exists and operates, so the work has to be real before the audit, not assembled for it.

ISO 27001 certification cost by stage in 2026

Figures assume a twenty-five to hundred-person organisation with a defined scope and some existing IT controls.

Total first-year cost usually lands between Rs 6,00,000 and Rs 20,00,000, with surveillance audits at roughly a third of the initial fee in each of the next two years.

Certification body fees versus consultant fees
01
Accreditation. Fees depend on the body's accreditation and the audit days required for your scope and headcount.
02
Scope size. A single product and office is cheaper to audit than five locations and a data centre.
03
Audit days. Set by the body using headcount and complexity, not negotiable beyond a point.
04
Consultant role. Building the system, not auditing it; the same firm cannot do both for a clean certification.
05
Recurring cost. Surveillance in years two and three plus a recertification audit in year four.
06
Internal time. The largest hidden line: evidence collection, reviews and interviews across departments.
Risk treatment and the statement of applicability

The risk register is the heart of the system. Assets, threats, likelihood, impact and treatment decisions have to be specific to your business, because a generic register produces generic controls and an auditor notices.

The statement of applicability then records which controls are applied, which are excluded and why. Exclusions are permitted, but they need a reason that survives a question, and "not applicable" is rarely one.

Surveillance audits after the certificate

The certificate is valid for three years, with surveillance audits in years two and three and recertification in year four. Those audits sample evidence, so the system must keep producing records after the project team disperses.

Most failures happen here rather than at initial certification: access reviews stop happening, supplier checks lapse, and the risk register goes stale. A named owner with a monthly routine is cheaper than an annual scramble.

Scope the certification narrowly at first

Include the systems that matter to your customers and leave out what does not. Widening scope later is easier than failing an audit because a forgotten office was included.

Evidence collection should be routine

Automate access reviews, backup checks and log retention so evidence accumulates without a project. Manual evidence gathering is the main reason year two costs more than expected.

Questions before appointing an ISO consultant

Ask how many certifications they have taken through Stage 2. Ask who writes the risk register. Ask what support continues after the certificate is issued.

Send the scope and the client requirement

Write to [email protected] with the products to include, headcount and the deadline a client has given you, or send the same on WhatsApp. Scope and headcount set the audit days.

Frequently Asked Questions
First-year cost typically runs Rs 6,00,000 to Rs 20,00,000, including gap assessment, system build, control implementation, internal audit and the certification body. Surveillance audits cost roughly a third of the initial fee each year after.
Yes, mainly because audit days and scope are smaller. A twenty-person software company with one product can certify for Rs 4,00,000 to Rs 8,00,000 in year one, while multi-location operations cost several times more.
Consultant work, risk assessment, statement of applicability, policy creation, control implementation, internal audit, management review and certification body fees. Internal staff time is excluded and is often the largest cost.
No. Certification requires independence, so the body that audits cannot be the firm that built the system. Using one firm for both compromises the certificate and is not accepted by accredited bodies.
Four to nine months is typical, including a gap assessment, implementation, internal audit and the two-stage certification audit. Rushing the evidence phase usually produces findings that delay the certificate.
Stage 1 checks readiness and documentation; Stage 2 tests whether controls operate in practice. Both are required, and Stage 1 findings must be closed before Stage 2 is scheduled.
Surveillance audits in years two and three and recertification in year four. Evidence must continue to be produced, so the system needs an owner and a routine rather than a project team.
Often yes, particularly for SaaS, IT services and any supplier handling client data. Some buyers accept SOC 2 instead, and the choice should follow what the buyer actually asks for.
Yes, scope can be limited to specific products, locations or services. A narrow, defensible scope is usually better than a wide one that cannot produce consistent evidence.
