Security Testing Cost

VAPT vs Security Audit Cost in India (2026)

An audit reviews how security is designed and governed; a test tries to break it. One produces a maturity opinion, the other produces evidence of an exploitable flaw. Buyers often ask for one and need the other, which is why the scope conversation matters more than the rate.

VAPT vs Security Audit Cost

Vulnerability assessment and penetration testing find and exploit weaknesses in applications, networks and cloud configuration. A security audit examines policies, access governance, change control and monitoring. Most mature programmes need both, in a defined order.

VAPT vs security audit cost by engagement in 2026

Ranges assume a web application with APIs and a small cloud environment.

Retesting after remediation typically costs twenty to thirty percent of the original test and should be budgeted at the start rather than negotiated later.

What each engagement actually tests
01
VAPT scope. Input handling, authentication, authorisation, session management, APIs, file upload and business logic abuse.
02
VAPT method. Manual exploitation with tooling support, evidenced by requests and responses rather than scanner output.
03
Audit scope. Access reviews, segregation of duties, change management, logging, backup, vendor risk and incident readiness.
04
Audit method. Interviews, document review and sample testing of records.
05
What VAPT proves. That specific flaws existed and were exploitable on a date.
06
What an audit proves. That governance and process controls are designed and operating, not that code is secure.
Compliance drivers and reporting

PCI DSS requires penetration testing and quarterly scans. ISO 27001 expects technical vulnerability management as part of a control set. SOC 2 examines change management and monitoring evidence. DPDP obligations rely on reasonable safeguards, which a test demonstrates more directly than a policy.

Reports should be usable by both engineers and buyers: severity, reproduction steps, business impact and a fix recommendation. A report that lists findings without reproduction steps cannot be remediated reliably.

Running both in the right order

The efficient sequence is audit first where governance is immature, because it identifies whether access control and change management exist at all. Testing a system with no process produces findings that recur after every fix.

Where the process is reasonably mature and the driver is a buyer or compliance deadline, testing comes first. Either way, retesting closes the loop and is the evidence that remediation actually happened.

Use an audit for direction and a test for proof

The audit tells you what to build; the test tells you whether it holds. Buying only one leaves either a plan without evidence or findings without a system to sustain the fixes.

Retesting is not optional

A finding is closed only when a retest confirms it. Without retesting, the original report remains the last known state and buyers treat it as current.

Questions for a security testing partner

Ask who performs the test and what certifications they hold. Ask whether retesting is included. Ask how they handle a critical finding discovered mid-engagement.

Send the application stack and the deadline

Write to [email protected] with the technology, the number of user roles and whether a buyer or regulator has set a date, or send the same on WhatsApp. The driver decides which exercise to run first.

Frequently Asked Questions
An application penetration test costs Rs 80,000 to Rs 3,00,000, while a security audit costs Rs 75,000 to Rs 3,00,000. A combined programme runs Rs 2,00,000 to Rs 8,00,000, and retesting adds twenty to thirty percent.
Usually testing comes first for a startup selling to enterprises, because buyers ask for evidence of testing. An audit becomes valuable once there are people, vendors and processes to govern.
VAPT includes scoping, manual testing, exploitation evidence, a severity-ranked report and a debrief. An audit includes interviews, document review, sample testing and a maturity report with recommendations.
It depends on the standard. PCI DSS requires penetration testing and scans, ISO 27001 expects vulnerability management and audits, and SOC 2 examines operating controls. Many buyers ask for a VAPT report by name.
A focused application test takes one to three weeks; a network and cloud test two to four. A security audit takes two to five weeks depending on how many processes and sites are in scope.
At least annually, and after significant changes to architecture or authentication. Systems handling payments or personal data often test twice a year.
Not reliably. An audit examines process and governance, not application logic. Code-level flaws need testing or a source review, which is a separate engagement.
It should be reported immediately rather than held for the final report. The contract should define the escalation window and whether the tester stops or continues testing.
Testing usually annually, with an audit every one to two years or when the organisation changes significantly. Running both in the same quarter is often inefficient; staggering them keeps evidence current.
