SOC 2 Cost

SOC 2 Compliance Cost in India (2026)

SOC 2 is an attestation report, not a certificate. That distinction drives the cost, because a Type II report covers a period of real operation rather than a point-in-time snapshot, and the observation window cannot be compressed without losing the point.

SOC 2 Compliance Cost

The first decision is which trust service criteria the buyer needs. Security is the baseline; availability, confidentiality, processing integrity and privacy add scope. Every additional criterion adds controls, evidence and audit hours.

SOC 2 compliance cost by report type in 2026

Ranges assume a SaaS business with a cloud infrastructure and a defined customer-facing system.

A first-year programme with readiness and Type II usually lands between Rs 6,00,000 and Rs 25,00,000. Annual renewal costs less than the first year because the controls already exist, but it is not optional.

Type I and Type II compared
01
Type I. An opinion on control design at a date, useful for an early enterprise deal.
02
Type II. An opinion on whether controls operated across a period, which is what most buyers actually want.
03
Window length. Three months is common for a first report, extending to twelve for maturity.
04
Evidence. Type II samples operations, so every control needs a trail rather than a description.
05
Timing. The window starts after controls are in place, not while they are being built.
06
Upgrade path. Many businesses start with Type I and follow with Type II once monitoring is stable.
Trust service criteria that drive effort

Security is expected and covers access, change management, monitoring, incident response and vendor oversight. Availability adds capacity planning, backup and recovery testing. Confidentiality and privacy add classification, retention and disposal obligations that touch product design.

Choosing criteria the buyer does not require is the most common waste in a first SOC 2 programme. Ask for the buyer's questionnaire and map their actual questions to criteria before scoping.

The observation window and its cost

The window is calendar time, and it is why SOC 2 cannot be bought in a fortnight. Controls must be operating before the window opens, evidence must be collected during it, and the auditor samples from it afterwards.

Automation changes the economics. Access reviews, change tickets, backup verifications and monitoring alerts generated by existing systems cost far less to evidence than screenshots assembled by hand each month.

Pick the criteria your buyers actually ask for

Read the security questionnaire before scoping. Security alone answers most requests, and additional criteria should be justified by a named customer requirement.

Automate evidence before the window opens

Every control that produces evidence automatically reduces renewal cost permanently. Manual evidence is the line that grows as the business grows.

Questions for a SOC 2 readiness partner

Ask which auditor they work with and whether that creates a conflict. Ask how many first-time reports they have supported. Ask what evidence the auditor will sample.

Send the buyer requirement and system scope

Write to [email protected] with the questionnaire you received, the systems in scope and the deadline, or send the same on WhatsApp. The questionnaire decides which criteria are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
A first-year programme with readiness and a Type II report typically costs Rs 6,00,000 to Rs 25,00,000. Type I audits alone run Rs 1,50,000 to Rs 6,00,000, and annual renewal is lower but still required.
It depends on scope. SOC 2 with security criteria only can be cheaper for a small SaaS business, while ISO 27001 covers a broader management system. Many businesses need whichever certificate their buyers name.
Readiness assessment, policy and control implementation, evidence automation, auditor fees for Type I or Type II, and management responses. Internal engineering time and tooling subscriptions are additional.
Readiness takes six to twelve weeks, then the observation window runs three to twelve months before the Type II report is issued. Type I can be completed in about three months from a standing start.
Type I reports whether controls are designed correctly at a point in time. Type II reports whether they operated effectively over a period. Enterprise buyers usually ask for Type II.
Security is the baseline. Availability, confidentiality, processing integrity and privacy are added only when a customer requires them, because each adds controls, evidence and audit time.
Yes. SOC 2 is a US-origin attestation, and Indian service providers obtain it because international customers ask for it. The audit can be performed by an accredited firm regardless of location.
Annually, with a new observation window each year. Buyers expect a current report, and a lapsed report is treated as no report at all in most procurement processes.
Substantially. The control sets overlap, so policies, risk assessment and monitoring can be reused. Evidence formats and reporting differ, which is why a mapped approach saves time without eliminating work.
