PCI DSS Cost

PCI DSS Compliance Cost in India (2026)

The cheapest PCI DSS project is the one that stores no card data. Scope is the cost driver, and every system that touches a card number drags networks, logs, staff and vendors into an assessment that would otherwise be a short self-questionnaire.

Share your requirement, current setup, and expected timeline. We will help you scope the right service approach quickly.

PCI DSS Compliance Cost

Compliance obligations depend on how many transactions you process and how card data flows through your systems. A redirect to a hosted payment page produces a very different assessment from storing card numbers in your own database.

Ranges assume an Indian merchant or service provider with a web and mobile payment flow.

Ongoing annual cost is usually sixty to eighty percent of the first year once remediation is done, because assessments recur while the remediation does not.

Scope reduction is the main saving
01
Hosted checkout. Redirect or iframe keeps card fields off your servers and shrinks the assessment dramatically.
02
Tokenisation. Replacing card numbers with tokens removes stored data from scope, though the token system itself needs review.
03
Network segmentation. Isolating the card data environment limits which systems the assessor must examine.
04
No storage of sensitive authentication data. CVV and full track data should never be retained after authorisation.
05
Vendor responsibility. Confirm in writing which requirements your gateway and hosting provider cover.
06
Retired flows. Old integrations that still accept card data expand scope for no business benefit.
SAQ, ROC and the assessor's role

A Self-Assessment Questionnaire is completed by you and, for some versions, signed with an attestation of compliance. A Report on Compliance is produced by a Qualified Security Assessor after an on-site review, and it is required at higher transaction volumes or where card data is stored.

The assessor is not a consultant. Remediation should be completed or well advanced before the assessment begins, otherwise the report records findings you already knew about and the fee is spent twice.

Scans, tests and quarterly obligations

Approved scanning vendor scans run quarterly against external-facing systems, and a penetration test is required at least annually and after significant change. Both produce findings, and findings need a remediation window with evidence of closure.

Calendar discipline matters more than budget here. A missed quarter is a compliance gap, and reconstructing scan history later is not possible.

Never store what you do not need

Card data that is not stored cannot leak. Removing storage is usually cheaper than protecting it, and it permanently reduces the scope of every future assessment.

Tokenisation changes the scope

Tokens let subscriptions and refunds work without retaining card numbers. The token provider becomes part of your vendor review, which is a smaller obligation than securing stored data yourself.

Questions for a PCI assessor

Ask what merchant level they would classify you at and why. Ask whether remediation support creates a conflict. Ask what evidence they will sample for each requirement.

Send the card flow and transaction volume

Write to [email protected] with how payments are taken, whether card data is stored and your approximate monthly volume, or send the same on WhatsApp. The flow decides the route.

Frequently Asked Questions
A self-assessment with hosted checkout costs Rs 1,50,000 to Rs 4,00,000, scope reduction work Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 8,00,000, and a full assessor report Rs 8,00,000 to Rs 30,00,000. Quarterly scans and testing add Rs 60,000 to Rs 3,00,000 a year.
Substantially. When card fields are hosted by the gateway and never touch your servers, the assessment covers far fewer systems. It is the single largest cost reduction available to most merchants.
Gap assessment, remediation support, self-assessment or assessor audit, quarterly vulnerability scans, annual penetration testing and evidence compilation. Gateway and hosting fees are separate.
It depends on transaction volume, whether card data is stored, and your acquirer's requirements. Many small merchants complete a self-assessment questionnaire, while higher volumes or direct card handling require a Report on Compliance.
Six to twelve weeks for a self-assessment route with minor remediation, three to six months where scope reduction or a full assessment is needed. Quarterly scans continue indefinitely.
Levels are set by annual transaction volume, with Level 1 covering the highest volumes and requiring the most rigorous assessment. Your acquirer confirms the level, and it determines which validation route applies.
Encryption reduces risk but does not remove the data from scope. Storing card numbers at all expands the assessment, which is why tokenisation through a gateway is usually the better commercial choice.
Annually, plus after significant changes to the payment environment. Quarterly scans and annual penetration tests continue between assessments.
No. It is a baseline of controls, not a guarantee. Most breaches involve compromised credentials or application flaws that a compliance checklist alone would not catch, which is why testing is separate.
