Augmentation Cost

Staff Augmentation Cost in India (2026)

Augmentation adds people to a team you already run. It is the cheapest way to cover a skill gap for a few months and the most expensive way to avoid hiring, because the rate includes a margin that never goes away and the knowledge leaves with the contractor.

Staff Augmentation Cost

Augmentation works when you have a technical lead, a backlog and a gap in capacity or skill. It fails when nobody on your side can review the work, because an unsupervised contractor produces code that is expensive to inherit.

Rates below are for individual engineers supplied into your process, working under your lead.

Hourly rates are higher per unit of time than monthly rates, which is why monthly is cheaper for sustained work and hourly is better for short interventions.

Hourly, monthly and milestone pricing
01
Hourly. Flexible and easy to start, but administrative overhead is high and utilisation is hard to verify.
02
Monthly. Predictable for both sides and cheaper per hour, usually with a minimum commitment of one to three months.
03
Milestone. Priced per deliverable rather than per person, which shifts risk to the supplier and suits defined work.
04
Retainer blocks. Pre-purchased hours at a discount, useful for maintenance rather than projects.
05
Overtime and weekend. Usually billed at a premium and should be agreed in advance.
06
Travel. Onsite visits are billed separately, including travel days.
Onboarding time is part of the cost

A contract engineer joining an existing codebase needs context: architecture, conventions, environments, review process and domain rules. That is typically two to four weeks before they contribute reliably, and it is billed.

For a three-month engagement, onboarding can consume a fifth of the paid time. That maths is why augmentation suits longer gaps and why short specialised tasks are better bought as a fixed deliverable.

When augmentation beats a project contract

Augmentation is the better choice when the work is continuous but the team is short-handed, when an existing lead can direct the work, and when the codebase is yours and staying yours. It is the worse choice when scope is unclear or when nobody internal can review quality.

The comparison should include the management time your side spends directing the contractor. That time is real, and it is usually omitted from the rate card.

Interview the engineer, not just the vendor

Ask for the specific person and test them on your stack. A supplier who cannot name the engineer is selling a promise, and the person who arrives may differ from the profile that won the work.

Set a minimum engagement

Short engagements cost more per productive hour. Where the need is two weeks, buy a defined deliverable instead of a person, and keep augmentation for three months or more.

Questions before signing an augmentation contract

Ask who reviews the work. Ask what notice applies on both sides. Ask whether the engineer can be converted to your payroll and on what terms.

Send the skill, seniority and hours needed

Write to [email protected] with the stack, the seniority you need and whether the work is full-time or part-time, or send the same on WhatsApp. Duration decides hourly versus monthly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Hourly rates run Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,500 by seniority, and monthly rates Rs 1,20,000 to Rs 5,50,000. Specialists in security, data or mobile sit at the top of both bands.
For short periods, yes, because there is no recruitment or severance. Beyond about eighteen months the margin on the rate usually exceeds the cost of employing the same person, provided utilisation stays high.
The engineer's time, payroll overhead, basic tooling and account management. Hardware, licences, travel and out-of-hours work are usually billed separately or agreed in advance.
Most contracts use a timesheet approved weekly by your lead, or a monthly allocation with a stated number of working days. The method should be agreed before work starts, not reconstructed at invoice time.
One to three months is typical for monthly pricing, with a notice period of two to four weeks. Hourly arrangements often carry a minimum block of hours per month.
Two to four weeks on an existing codebase, longer where documentation is thin. That time is billed, so short engagements carry a high effective cost per productive hour.
Often yes, sometimes with a conversion fee. The terms should be written into the contract at the start rather than negotiated when you decide to hire.
A replacement should be offered within an agreed period, usually one to two weeks. The contract should define whether the replacement is your choice and whether the transition is billed.
You do, and it should be explicit. Repository access, commits under your organisation and a clause assigning work product on creation avoid ambiguity later.
