The decision turns on one thing: whether the machine is still in warranty.
Three tiers, and only two of them are Apple’s
Apple retail and Authorised Service Providers. The only channel with genuine Apple parts, factory diagnostics, and a service record attached to the machine. For a laptop under warranty, or one you intend to resell, this is the default.
Independent Mac specialists. Component-level work with OEM-grade or salvaged parts, usually cheaper and often faster because nothing is sent to a central hub. The risk is in whether the diagnosis is right and the part is what they said it was.
General computer repair. Fine for storage, memory, operating system and networking. Not the place for a board, a display assembly or a swollen battery.
“Apple Certified” on a shop board means nothing on its own: there is no universal Apple technician licence, and vendor training courses are not a warranty. 24Bit System is an independent Mac specialist rather than an authorised provider.
What authorised service costs, and why it shocks people
Apple publishes out-of-warranty service estimates, and they are high for a reason: the parts are the genuine bonded assemblies, and labour is charged against a fixed schedule. Typical ranges in Delhi NCR:
| Job | Authorised, out of warranty | Independent |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | ₹6,000-18,000 | ₹4,000-12,000 |
| Display assembly | ₹20,000-45,000 | ₹15,000-38,000 |
| Keyboard or top case | ₹9,000-20,000 | ₹6,000-16,000 |
| Trackpad | ₹5,000-10,000 | ₹3,500-8,000 |
| Charging port or board component | ₹8,000-18,000 | ₹4,000-14,000 |
Ranges, not quotes. Apple’s figure moves with the model and year, an independent shop’s with the grade of part, and both tend to quote a diagnostic fee that is usually credited against the work.
A MacBook display is not a panel in a bezel: it is a bonded assembly of glass, panel, camera and sensors, priced accordingly. The independent alternative is lower, and the difference is the part grade rather than the labour.
Is authorised worth it out of warranty?
Sometimes, and the test is narrow. Authorised service is worth paying for when:
- The machine is still inside its warranty period, when parts and labour may both be covered.
- It is under about three years old and the display or the board is involved, because the machine will be resold and the service record has value.
- The fault is one Apple has a service programme for, since eligibility is handled at that tier.
Out of warranty and outside any programme, an independent shop is usually the better choice for batteries, keyboards, trackpads, top cases, data work and software. And there is a ceiling at either tier: if the quote is more than about half of a comparable new machine, the machine is finished, whoever does the work.
The economics of board-level work specifically are covered in the Delhi MacBook guide.
What a good independent Mac shop should do
Ask these before you leave the machine; the answers tell you more than any badge:
- What is the fault, in writing, before you quote? Not “screen problem”, but which part and what grade.
- In-house or sent off? Couriering to a hub adds days and handling risk to a bonded display.
- Which Apple Silicon board procedures will you attempt? An honest shop tells you when a board job is not worth doing.
- What happens if the part is wrong or the fault returns? A written warranty, and a stated period.
- What do you need me to do before handing it over? See below, because this one is a genuine trap.
Before you hand over an Apple Silicon MacBook
A failure that takes out the processor package can take the storage with it, so ask for the storage to be assessed before a board replacement is authorised rather than after. Data recovery is worth a call before you ship the machine anywhere.
On a machine that does power on, remove the activation lock before service. Sign out of iCloud, turn off Find My Mac, and expect to be asked for the Apple ID password so diagnostics can run. Without that, a MacBook that stops at a login screen cannot be tested and will simply be sent back. Do this at home, not at the counter.
FAQ
Is an independent Mac shop safe for my machine? For batteries, keyboards, trackpads, top cases and data work, yes, provided the diagnosis is in writing and the part grade stated. For board-level work on Apple Silicon, weigh it carefully.
How long does it take at an authorised centre? Often three to seven days including the time the machine is couriered to a central location. Independent shops commonly do batteries and keyboards the same day.
Can Apple service an out-of-warranty MacBook? Yes, at published out-of-warranty rates. You can also check whether your serial number is covered by a service programme before you pay anyone.
Should I get AppleCare or a local service plan? Worth it if the machine is business-critical and you want parts and labour covered. Not worth it if the machine is a second unit and a few days of downtime is acceptable.
We have four MacBooks in the office, is this worth a support contract? At that volume, yes, because coordination costs more than the repairs do. IT AMC and managed support covers the practical side of covering several machines a month.
