The platform question gets framed as which is cheaper. It is not a cost question. Google Search harvests demand that already exists; Meta interrupts people who were not looking for you. For most Indian SMBs only one of those matches the business they have.

Intent versus interruption

Google Search reaches someone at the moment they type a problem into their phone. “Laptop screen replacement Noida”, “AC service near me”, “wholesale kurta market”. The query tells you what they want and roughly what they will pay. That is why search clicks convert far better, and why search traffic is small. You bid on a fraction of what people type.

Meta reaches people based on who they appear to be, plus retargeting pools of people who already touched your site. Nobody in the audience was searching for you. The ad creates demand, or captures demand somebody else created.

This is why the same ad can work brilliantly on Meta and fail on Search. On Meta you can say “Flat 40% off, this weekend only”. On Search nobody types a discount phrase, so that ad gets no clicks.

Decision table by category

Business typeStart withWhy
Local service (repair, clinic, salon)Google SearchDemand is local; “near me” queries convert
Emergency or urgent serviceSearch, then Meta retargetingNobody discovers this need by scrolling
eCommerce, low to mid ticketMeta prospecting plus Google ShoppingDiscovery creates the demand Search then captures
eCommerce, repeat purchaseMeta retargeting plus email/WhatsAppExisting buyers, cheapest audience available
B2B and industrial salesGoogle SearchBuyers search specs, vendors and RFQs
Fashion, jewellery, food deliveryMetaVisual product, decided by browsing not querying
Education, coaching, classesGoogle plus WhatsApp follow-upLeads qualify on search, close on messaging
Brand awareness, new launchMetaSearch cannot reach people with no intent yet

Where the row says “Google plus something else”, the something else is normally remarketing. Running Meta prospecting before you have conversion history is the most common expensive mistake.

What actually differs in cost

Click costs and CPMs in India vary enormously by category, city, seasonality and competition, so treat any quoted figure as a wide range rather than a fact. Insurance, loan and education keywords can run many times the cost of a local service keyword in the same account.

FactorGoogle SearchMeta
Cost per clickGenerally higherGenerally lower
Cost per qualified leadUsually lowerUsually higher
Volume availableSmall, intent-limitedLarge but audience-limited
Time to first resultDays1-3 weeks to exit learning
Creative refresh costLow, text onlyHigh, new assets every few weeks

Cost per click is the worst metric to compare on, because Meta’s cheap clicks convert worse. Cost per qualified lead is the only comparison that matters, and Meta’s retargeting is often the cheapest qualified lead source available, because the audience already knows you.

The order to launch in

  1. Google Search first, tight geo, exact and phrase match, one service line. This proves the offer works and gives you real search terms.
  2. Meta retargeting second, once you have a few hundred monthly visitors. Audience: 30-day visitors, converters excluded. Very few creatives needed.
  3. Meta prospecting third, only after retargeting is stable and pixel purchases fire reliably.

If you are at step one, the Google Ads setup guide is the next read. For the Meta mechanics, Facebook Ads for beginners goes deeper.

The mistakes that make either platform look bad

  • Judging Meta on week one. Learning needs roughly 50 conversions per week per ad set before results settle. Below that, performance swings for no reason you can see.
  • Judging Google on clicks. Rank position and impressions feel like progress and are not.
  • Splitting budget 50/50 from day one. Two half-funded channels produce two datasets too small to act on.
  • Ignoring the landing page. A good ad pointing at a slow mobile page is a tax on both platforms.
  • Mixing offer terms. GST-inclusive pricing must match on ad, page and invoice.

FAQ

Which platform is cheaper for a small Indian business? Meta usually costs less per click, Google usually costs less per qualified lead. For a local service business, per-lead cost is what decides it, and Search usually wins.

Can I run both with a small budget? Yes, but not as a 50/50 split from day one. Run Search first, add Meta retargeting on a small budget, and only add Meta prospecting once retargeting is profitable.

Which is better for a new business nobody has heard of? Meta, for a while. Search requires the brand or the category term to be searched for, and awareness campaigns are genuinely how demand gets created. Pair it with Search so you catch people who start searching later.

Is Instagram better than Facebook for ads in India? They run on the same Meta infrastructure, so for most Indian businesses the practical difference is creative format rather than audience. Instagram favours visual products, Facebook favours local services and older demographics. You often get both from one campaign.

How long before I know which platform works? Six to eight weeks of consistent spend on each, judged on cost per qualified lead. Anything shorter is noise, especially on Meta.
