Most of the budget wasted on a first Google Ads account is lost before launch, in setup decisions that look trivial. This walkthrough covers the order of operations, the Indian-specific choices, and the five mistakes that eat the first month.
Decisions you cannot change later
Two things are permanent: billing country and billing currency. Set country to India and currency to INR. Use a business Google account you control, not a personal Gmail.
Decline the Smart Campaign prompt. Those are built to spend quickly, not well, and they hide the control you need from week two.
Plan campaign naming first. A structure like Campaign-AdGroup-MatchType (for example LaptopRepair-Exact-A) makes search term reports readable six months later.
Keyword research for Indian search behaviour
Indian queries are messier than English ones. Expect transliteration, Hinglish in Latin script, and heavy spelling variation. Test “laptop repair”, “laptob repair” and “lap top repair” separately before assuming a misspelling is not a keyword.
Type a seed term into a real Google search on an Indian mobile network and record what appears.
Group by intent, not wording. For an IT services business, “laptop screen replacement cost” and “HP laptop screen price” belong together. “Laptop repair near me” and “best laptop repair Noida” share an ad group only if one ad satisfies both.
Start with exact and phrase match. Broad match needs conversion data.
Campaign structure
One campaign per service line. Split brand from non-brand, always. Brand terms cost little and convert well, so mixing them flatters your numbers and hides what acquisition keywords cost.
Turn off “Display Network expansion” in month one. It is where a new account sends budget to random banner inventory. Re-enable for remarketing once you have conversions.
| Element | Setting for month one |
|---|---|
| Campaign type | Search, one campaign per service |
| Location | Serviceable pin codes, not “India” |
| Ad rotation | On, to gather performance data |
| Networks | Google Search only |
| Start date | Today, not next month |
The location setting catches people out. “Target: people in your regularly targeted locations” is correct. The other option reaches anyone whose interest puts them in your area, including people in another state.
Ad copy that survives an auction
Two responsive search ads per ad group minimum, three if you can. Lead with the service and the location, since both are usually in the query:

For Indian audiences, put the phone number in the ad. A large share of clicks go straight to a call, and call tracking is what lets you attribute it.
Mention GST-inclusive pricing where an offer exists, and match the landing page exactly. Mismatched pricing generates refund conversations that cost more than the click saved.
If you decide to run Meta as well, the Facebook Ads beginners guide covers that setup.
Conversion tracking, set up before spending
Do not launch until this works. The commonest first-month mistake is spending for two weeks, then finding the thank-you page fires the conversion code twice, or form submissions are not recorded.
In this order:
- Define the conversion that matters. For most Indian SMBs this is a phone call, WhatsApp click, or form submission. Page views are not business outcomes.
- Install the tag and verify it fires, using Tag Assistant on the live site.
- Test each conversion yourself, on mobile, on a real form submission.
- Mark completed actions as primary, secondary as secondary.
- Import offline conversions later, once sales data exists. That is what makes target ROAS possible.
The Google Ads vs Facebook Ads comparison covers which platform suits your category.
The five mistakes that waste month one
- Launching without conversion tracking. No baseline, no optimisation, no learning.
- Running brand and non-brand in one campaign. Cost per lead looks great while acquisition bleeds.
- Leaving network expansion on. Display network eats unattributable budget.
- Targeting a country instead of your service area. You pay for clicks from places you cannot serve.
- Daily tweaking. Bid changes reset learning. One hour weekly is enough; month-to-month work is in the PPC management guide.
One assumption: this works only if the offer is clear. If customers cannot tell what you charge or what turnaround to expect, ads will not fix that.
FAQ
How much budget should I start with? Enough for a few hundred clicks a month, roughly ₹10,000-25,000 for most Indian SMBs. Below that you cannot learn anything; above that without tracking you are spending faster, not smarter.
Should I hire an agency or do it myself for the first month? Do it yourself if you have 10 to 15 hours and someone can verify tracking. At minimum, own the account setup and tracking even if an agency runs the ads.
Do I need a website before running Google Ads? Yes. If your landing page is your homepage, you pay for the click and lose the customer. Build one page per service first.
How long before Google Ads shows results? Leads can appear in week one. Meaningful performance data needs six to eight weeks. Judging an account after ten days is the commonest reason good campaigns get switched off early.
Can I run Google Ads without a large inventory? For a local service business, yes, and that is often the strongest case for search. Inventory matters more for eCommerce, where you need product-level data.
