Meta’s ad manager is easier to launch than Google Ads and harder to run well. The interface suggests it will optimise itself, so most first campaigns quietly burn a month of budget on decisions nobody made.

Structure before budget

Use Business Manager and a proper ad account even for one campaign. Link your Instagram account from day one, otherwise Instagram-native creative later forces a reconfigure.

  • Campaign carries the objective and the budget. Never more than three in the first quarter.
  • Ad set carries audience, budget, placements and schedule.
  • Ad carries the creative and the copy.

Keep this hierarchy strict. Mixing budgets inside ad sets is the most common reason accounts deliver erratically.

Choosing the objective, and when not to

Objective selection tells Meta which event to optimise toward. Choosing the wrong one means Meta finds your cheapest version of the wrong thing.

ObjectiveUse it whenWatch out
SalesPurchase is tracked and firingMost Indian accounts need pixel work first
LeadsYou want phone or WhatsApp enquiriesCheap form leads are often junk
TrafficYou genuinely want clicks to a pageBuys cheap, useless visitors
EngagementBoosting a postAlmost never justifies paid budget
AwarenessFestival launch or new categoryHard to measure beyond reach

Traffic is the trap. Meta delivers very cheap clicks from people who will never buy, and the campaign looks healthy on paper.

For most Indian SMBs the workable path is: get purchases or leads firing properly, optimise for that, and retarget everything else.

Paid sits on top of an organic feed that already posts. The social media marketing guide for Indian SMEs covers what to post and which two platforms to pick.

Audience building without blowing the budget

Meta’s targeting has changed repeatedly and interest targeting has narrowed. Treat interest stacks as a hypothesis, not an instrument.

Broad targeting works better than most advertisers expect, once you have enough conversions. The algorithm finds better segments than you can specify manually.

Retargeting should be your first campaign, not your last. People who visited your site in the last 14 to 30 days, excluded if they purchased. Excluding converters is the step people forget, and without it you pay to advertise to people who already bought.

Layer your audiences. Cold broad, then engaged, then site visitors, then cart or checkout, then converters excluded. Each layer is cheaper than the one above.

Do not stack more than 3-4 ad sets per campaign early on. Each one splits your conversion volume.

The learning phase, in plain terms

Meta needs roughly 50 conversions per week inside an ad set before delivery is stable. Below that, results swing unpredictably and edits reset the clock.

  • Concentrate, do not spread. Four ad sets getting 12 conversions each is worse than one getting 50.
  • Do not edit ads daily. Budget, creative or audience changes restart learning. Twice a month is healthier.
  • Do not switch campaigns off at day 12 because cost per lead looked bad. It probably still is at day 45.
  • If you have low volume, run fewer campaigns. Two campaigns, one ad set each, three creatives, ₹500-1,000 daily. Ten campaigns is not.

Creative that works in an Indian feed

Most Indian feeds are mobile, thumb-led, and often muted. Practical rules:

  • Video beats static once you have the skill. A good photo set still outperforms a badly made video.
  • Show the thing. A real invoice, dashboard, repair bench, or product on a real floor. Stock imagery reads as an ad immediately.
  • Text on creative works in India where much viewing is muted. Keep it to a few words plus a price.
  • Price in the creative or first line. Indian feed users scan for the number.
  • Festival creative needs to be local. A generic “Happy Diwali” post gets swiped; a “same-day delivery, orders before 4pm” post does not.
  • Hindi or Hinglish in the copy outperforms English-only for most consumer audiences, particularly in tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

Leave placements on Automatic for the first month. Manual placement buys control you will not use and costs reach.

When Meta is the wrong tool

Meta underperforms when there is no demand to capture, when the product cannot be shown visually, or when the sales cycle is long and technical. In those cases search does better. The category breakdown is in Google Ads vs Facebook Ads, and the search walkthrough is in the Google Ads setup guide.

FAQ

How much budget do I need for Facebook Ads in India? Enough for roughly 50 conversions per week in one ad set, which for most SMBs means ₹15,000-40,000 a month. Below that, keep it to a single retargeting campaign and put the rest into search.

Should I use Advantage+ or manual targeting? Advantage+ placements and audience suggestions, once you have 50+ weekly conversions, usually beat manual optimisation. Manual targeting is more useful early, for testing a hypothesis. Use the broad campaign as your control.

Do Instagram and Facebook ads need separate campaigns? No. Same infrastructure, and Instagram placements serve automatically. Separate them only if your creative is format-specific enough to change which one performs.

How long before a Meta campaign is worth judging? Three to four weeks minimum, often six for cold prospecting. Judge on cost per qualified lead, not CPM.

Can I run Meta ads without a website? Yes, with a WhatsApp or lead form as the destination. WhatsApp destinations convert well because most customers would rather message than fill a form.
