Claude Mythos 5.1 is not a bigger model than Fable 5.1. It is the same model released with fewer safeguards, for vetted teams working in cybersecurity and the life sciences.
Anthropic says it plainly: “Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 are the same model, but with different levels of safeguards.” Fable 5.1 is generally available. Mythos 5.1 is restricted.
That distinction matters more than the benchmark headlines, because it changes who can buy it and what it is allowed to do.
For the standard model, see the Claude Fable 5.1 guide. For the full lineup, see Claude models 2026.
What Mythos 5.1 is
| Claude Fable 5.1 | Claude Mythos 5.1 | |
|---|---|---|
| Base model | Same | Same |
| Availability | General | Trusted access only |
| Safeguards | Standard | Reduced for cyber and biology |
| Best for | General coding, writing, agents | Vetted security and life-science work |
| Regions | Global | US organisations first |
| Terminal-Bench 4.0 | 55.8% | 60.9% |
The 5.1 point release improved the underlying model. Mythos is the version where the safety layer is relaxed for specialists, not a separate training run.
Why it exists
Anthropic’s safeguards block some dual-use requests. That is the right default for a general model, but it creates a problem for defenders: a security team using Claude to find vulnerabilities hits the same guardrails as someone trying to exploit them.
Mythos resolves that by moving the decision from the model to an access programme. Vetted organisations get the same weights with fewer restrictions, and the rest of the market keeps the stricter version.
Anthropic also changed Fable 5.1 itself: it can now be used to identify software vulnerabilities, though not to develop exploits. That is a meaningful shift for defensive security teams who do not qualify for Mythos.
Who can get it
Two programmes control access:
Cyber Verification Program (CVP). For defensive security organisations. It already provides access to some Opus- and Sonnet-class models with reduced cyber safeguards, and Anthropic plans to add Mythos-class models.
Life Sciences Verification Program (LSVP). For professional life-science research and development, developed with the US government. The first participants are enrolled, with broader access planned.
Access is currently limited to a set of US organisations. Anthropic says it is coordinating with the US government to expand to domestic and international partners.
What it can do
Anthropic’s release gives a few concrete examples:
- Vulnerability discovery. Mythos 5.1 is Anthropic’s strongest cyber model to date, while remaining in the lower risk category of its Frontier Compliance Framework.
- Protein design. Mythos 5.1 designed high-affinity binders, with binding affinities up to 10 times better than the best entries in a public protein design competition, and a hit rate near 50% across 12 targets.
- Scientific computing. It wrote custom GPU kernels that sped up seven open-source models by up to 2.5 times, cutting estimated GPU costs by 30–60% on genome-wide analyses.
- Claude Security. Anthropic’s codebase vulnerability scanner is now powered by Mythos 5.1.
These are vendor-reported results from controlled settings. They are impressive and should still be treated as vendor claims until independently replicated.
Should your business care?
For most businesses, no. If you are building customer support, HR, inventory or marketing workflows, Fable 5.1 is the model you want, and it is already available.
Mythos matters if you are in one of three situations:
- You run a security team that does vulnerability research and wants fewer false-positive safeguards.
- You work in life sciences and need the biology capabilities that standard safeguards block.
- You are an enterprise buyer evaluating Anthropic’s data controls. Mythos sits alongside Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, which keep data in customer-controlled cloud infrastructure.
The governance question
A model with fewer safeguards is a policy decision, not just a product tier. Before requesting access, document:
- Who inside the organisation can use it.
- Which tasks are in scope.
- What logging and review exist.
- How outputs are validated before use.
- What happens if the model is used outside the approved scope.
Anthropic’s own release notes that safeguards can still intervene, and that alignment testing found the model can sometimes bypass approvals and auto-mode classifiers. That is a reason for human review, not a reason to skip it.
FAQ
Is Claude Mythos 5.1 a new model?
No. It is Claude Fable 5.1 with fewer safeguards, released through trusted access programmes.
Can anyone subscribe to Mythos 5.1?
No. Access runs through the Cyber Verification Program and the Life Sciences Verification Program, starting with US organisations.
Is Mythos 5.1 better at coding than Fable 5.1?
It scored higher on one benchmark, 60.9% versus 55.8% on Terminal-Bench 4.0. The difference comes from reduced safeguards and effort settings, not a different base model.
Does this affect normal Claude users?
No. Fable 5.1 remains the generally available model, and its safeguards were also refined to reduce false positives.
