Most AI product demos are in English. Most Indian customers are not. That gap is the opportunity, and also where a lot of projects fail.

This guide covers what current models do well in Indian languages, where they still break, and how to test before you put them in front of customers.

For the model layer, see best AI model for writing and best AI model for agents.

What works today

Use caseReadinessNotes
Translation between English and HindiStrongFormal text is reliable; idioms less so
Summarising Hindi documentsGoodCheck names, numbers and dates
Customer support chat in HindiGoodBetter with a glossary and examples
Hinglish chatModerateCode-mixing confuses some models
Voice agents in HindiModerateAccent and background noise matter
Tamil, Telugu, Bengali chatModerateQuality varies more than Hindi
Legal or medical translationWeakNeeds a human expert in the loop
Regional dialectsWeakTest before promising support

Hindi and English are the best-supported pair. The further you move from formal Hindi, the more review you need.

The code-mixing problem

Real Indian conversations mix languages: “Order kab dispatch hoga?” or “Invoice PDF bhej dijiye”. Models handle this unevenly.

Test three registers separately:

  1. Formal Hindi in Devanagari script.
  2. Hindi in Latin script (transliteration).
  3. Hinglish, mixing Hindi and English in one sentence.

A model that is good at one may fail at another. Do not assume the score carries over.

Transliteration and script

Indic scripts tokenise differently from English. The same sentence can consume more tokens in Devanagari than in Latin script, which changes cost and sometimes truncates output.

Practical rules:

  • Decide the input script your product expects, and normalise it before the model.
  • Keep output in the same script the customer used.
  • Do not mix scripts inside one field.
  • Test token counts on real samples, not English approximations.

Voice is harder than text

Text quality does not predict voice quality. A voice agent adds three failure points:

  • Speech recognition on accents, background noise and code-mixing.
  • Turn-taking and interruption handling.
  • Speech synthesis that sounds natural in the target language.

Test each stage separately. A good LLM behind a weak recogniser still produces a bad call.

How to evaluate in-language

Use 30 prompts per language, scored by a native speaker:

TestWhat it catches
Formal paragraphGrammar and register
Hinglish sentenceCode-mixing handling
Named entitiesNames, places, brands
Numbers and datesFormat and conversion errors
Ambiguous requestClarification behaviour
Refusal caseSafety and tone
Long documentTruncation and drift

Score on accuracy, naturalness and cultural fit. A grammatically correct answer can still sound foreign.

Where AI should not be the only voice

  • Legal, medical and financial advice.
  • Grievance handling with legal consequences.
  • Anything involving consent or a contract.
  • Content in a language no one on your team can review.

In those cases, AI drafts and a human approves.

Cost considerations

Indic-language text can consume more tokens than the English equivalent, so a per-word cost estimate will mislead you. Measure tokens on your own samples.

For high-volume chat, a cheaper model with a strong glossary often beats a flagship with no local context. See AI model routing.

A rollout plan

  1. Pick one language and one use case.
  2. Collect 100 real conversations.
  3. Build a glossary of product terms and brand names.
  4. Test two models on 30 prompts with a native speaker.
  5. Ship to a small cohort with human review.
  6. Measure containment, escalation and satisfaction.
  7. Expand language by language, not all at once.

FAQ

Which Indian languages do AI models handle best?

Hindi and English are the strongest pair. Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Marathi are usable for many tasks but need more testing. Dialects remain weak.

Can AI handle Hinglish?

Sometimes. It is less reliable than formal Hindi or English, so test code-mixed input separately and keep a human review step.

Is AI translation good enough for legal documents?

No. Use it for a first draft and have a qualified human review the result.

Do Indian languages cost more to process?

Token counts can be higher for Indic scripts, so cost per word is not the same as cost per token. Measure on your own text.
